I use the orriginal drain plug gasket, over and over on the Savage and on every vehicle I have owned for the last 40yrs. I have never had trouble with leaking. I do not over tighten either for the risk of stripping the threads.
I have both the Clymer's and Factory manual and do not remember any thing mentioned about changing the gasket.
The dealler would sell gaskets, if only to those that might have lost theirs. The way you described installation sounds OK. I can not tell on mine because, I always thought that it was flat.
